Burning of Zozobra (September 1st, 2017)
Since 1924, the burning of the 50-foot tall effigy known as Zozobra has become one of the most beloved Santa Fe festivals! According to mythology, Zozobra represents the power of darkness and despair over the city. He is reborn annually because of our own nefarious and woeful deeds. However, the burning of the “monster” is symbolic of the people setting fire to their own troubles and replacing them with joy and celebration. It is a one-of-a-kind event that you must see to believe!
Fiesta de Santa Fe (September 8th-10th, 2017)
Each September, the Santa Fe Plaza is transformed into the venue for the city’s biggest cultural celebration! The Fiesta de Santa Fe commemorates the peaceful reconquest for the capital in 1692 with a re-enactment, arts and crafts, entertainment, and endless food! Travelers who enjoy history won’t want to miss the re-enactment of De Vargas ceremony.
