Valles Caldera National Preserve Snowshoeing
Though most of the hiking trails we’ve been enjoying in northern New Mexico all spring, summer, and fall are still open for exploration, some of them require the use of snowshoes in the winter. But one step on the soft, powdery white snow in the tranquil setting of places like Carson National Forest, and you’ll be hooked on the many pleasures of snowshoeing.
Though you can make just about any hiking trail a snowshoeing adventure, one of our favorite places to go snowshoeing in New Mexico is Valles Caldera National Preserve. Valles Caldera National Preserve is located about an hour from our Chimayó Bed and Breakfast, but it’s a drive that will be well worth your time, especially when it’s covered in the white snows of winter.
Around 1.25 million years ago, a massive volcanic explosion in New Mexico resulted in a crater 13 miles wide. Today, this depression is known as the Valles Caldera National Preserve. It’s a sensational place to hike any time of the year, and it’s also a mesmerizing place to go stargazing at night. In fact, it’s one of the few places in the country recognized as an International Dark Sky Park.
Head in for some snowshoeing in the winter, though, and you’ll find yourself in a tranquil, mesmerizing paradise. Winter at the Valles Caldera National Preserve is nothing short of spectacular. Whether aboard a pair of cross-country skies or strapped to a pair of snowshoes, here you can find yourself traversing open valleys and silent forests.
None of the trails at Valles Caldera National Preserve are groomed during the winter, meaning this location is for experienced snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Though it may look flat and tranquil, the ground beneath you can be tricky and unpredictable in the winter, so proceed cautiously.
