Spend a Day Skiing at Taos Ski Valley
One of the most iconic New Mexico ski resorts is Taos Ski Valley, found just outside the charming, historic town of Taos. Taos Ski Valley is an easy 90-minute drive from our New Mexico Bed and Breakfast through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the state. Taos Ski Valley is the largest of the New Mexico ski resorts and is considered by many to be one of the best. It’s particularly great if you’re looking for a touch of old-school skiing with enough modern amenities to make it a satisfying day on the slopes.
The 202/2023 ski season at Taos Ski Valley is slated to open on November 24. There are more than 100 skiable runs at Taos Ski Valley, serviced by various high-speed lifts and their signature gondola. With a vertical drop of just over 3,100 feet, you can expect a healthy mix of difficulty levels here, with plenty of runs for everyone from beginners to double-black diamond skiers.
Though Taos Ski Valley is one of the most popular New Mexico Ski Resorts, it won’t feel like it when you’re out there skiing. Taos Ski Valley is divided into five sections: The Lower Front Side, Upper Front Side, Back Side, Highline Ridge, and the West Basin Ridge. - Ski Santa Fe is also well-rated among New Mexico ski resorts and is approximately an hour from Chimayó. The views from the top of this ski area are pretty impressive, as in the scenery as you head down any one of their 86 runs. As with other New Mexico ski resorts, the terrain here is diverse and suitable for a broad range of skiers and snowboarders.
- Pajarito is considered a hidden gem among New Mexico ski resorts. As you head down one run after the other, you’ll find yourself admiring gorgeous views of the Rio Grande Valley and the impressive Sangre de Cristo mountains in the distance. The ski season here is often a bit longer, too, starting in November and extending through April.
- Red River Ski Area is one of the most authentic New Mexico ski resorts, especially for those looking for a fabulous day on the slopes without all the bells and whistles of larger, nationalized ski resorts. The Red River Ski Area offers steep tree-filled powder runs, fewer crowds, and a little bit of something for everyone.
- Sipapu offers one of the longest ski seasons in New Mexico and is a fantastic place to ski with the entire family. They will open for the season on November 18, and we’re already looking forward to skiing through this gorgeous, protected portion of the Carson National Forest.
