About the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad

In 1880, a track was built between Antonio and Chama, NM as a part of the San Juan extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. The route through deep gorges and steep passes was an awe-inspiring sight for travelers and was a feat of engineering at the time. However, the vital role of the railroad ended with the decline of the silver mining industry during the 1890’s. In 1969, the railroad was filed for abandonment, but the most scenic part of its route was rescued by the states of New Mexico and Colorado.

Today, visitors have the opportunity to ride this nearly 150-year-old train route and embark on the adventure of a lifetime! The authentic steam-powered locomotive will introduce you to fantastic views of the mountains and Conejos Valley. This award-winning excursion is sure to become the highlight of your getaway to New Mexico!
