More About Jemez Springs

Jemez Springs is a northern New Mexican town whose history dates back to 2,500 B.C. The land was originally inhabited by the pueblo of Guisewa. Many of the people who live in Jemez Springs today are the descendants of this ancient tribe. In the 1500’s, Spanish missionaries arrived and brought civilization to the region. Many geological and cultural artifacts still stand in Jemez Springs today, making the town a favorite for many local tourists and historians.

4 of the Most Fun Things to Do in Jemez Springs

1. Relax in a Natural Hot Spring

Several New Mexico hot springs are scattered throughout the Jemez Valley. While not all of them are available for public use, you are permitted to visit these reviving pools:

Jemez Soda Dam– This dam is formed by a stone that stands as one of the oldest in Jemez Valley. The limestone formation is accompanied by a small mineral spring that is open for your enjoyment.

McCauley Warm Springs– After a 3.8-mile trek just outside of Jemez Springs, you will be greeted by a beautiful hot spring featuring a waterfall. The trail is accessible all year round and your furry friends are welcome to join you.

Spence Hot Springs- This spring must also be reached by hiking, but the .7-mile trail is very easy for most visitors. You’ll love the re-energizing waters that are surrounded by New Mexico’s beautiful nature.

2. Jemez State Monument

The Jemez State Monument consists of the ruins of the ancient Jemez people known as the Giusewa and the 17th Century Spanish mission, San Jose de los Jemez. The mission had a unique octagonal-shaped bell tower, which is the monument’s main attraction. There is also a museum and signed trail at the Monument, which is part of New Mexico State Monuments.

3. Jemez Springs Bath House

This unique spa is a must for those in need of a little TLC. At the Jemez Springs Bath House, you’ll enjoy a dip in a healing mineral bath, a deep and rejuvenating massage, and more. The Bath House is also a great spot for body scrubs, waxing, and other cosmetology services. We guarantee that you’ll leave looking and feeling better than when you arrived!

4. Jemez Mountain Trail

For some of the most scenic views in the state of New Mexico, a trip down the Jemez Mountain Trail is in order! The road begins at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and continues along the Jemez State Monument and Valles Caldera Preserve before ending at Bandelier National Monument. Along the way, be sure to enjoy the many opportunities for hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
