What to Know About the 2021 Santa Fe opera Season
The silver lining to the forced cancellation of Santa Fe Opera’s 2020 season was a surge of donations, along with federal grants, to keep the beloved venue and organization afloat, and with it, a heroic effort to make the 2021 season happen. Its slightly shortened slate of three new productions and one world premiere — 30 performances in all — includes Mozart’s The Marriage Of Figaro, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and the Britten production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The world premiere is of The Lord of Cries, a contemporary take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and a Euripides play, The Bacchae.
Here’s what to prepare for if you plan to attend:
- Ticket orders are being taken only over the phone and online, for printing at home or use on mobile devices. No walk-up orders at the box office. Sales will be phased in during the first half of the year, with seating locations announced in the late spring. It’s important to order tickets sooner than later because seating will be limited for social distancing reasons to between 30 and 50 percent of normal capacity.
- The Opera’s popular preview buffet dinners, pre-performance talks, and backstage tours “likely” won’t happen this year. And it’s just as likely that the Opera’s traditionally festive “tailgate” scene will be limited — but check back in case you have an opportunity to be part of the party! - Some things will never change, and that’s the blend of styles that comes with high opera in the high desert. You’re just as welcome at the Opera dressed in “Santa Fe Casual” — “nice denim, suedes, boots, lots of turquoise and silver, etc.” — or dressed to the nines as you might if you were attending the opera in a more urban setting. Either way, bring a sweater for the evening — the temperatures drop quickly at 7,500 feet above sea level once the sun sinks below the horizon!
- Take advantage of everything else Santa Fe has to offer. Since you’ll already be in an artsy mood, be sure to check out the dazzling display of works by members of the area’s robust arts scene at the Santa Fe Artists Market, which at this point is aiming for a March 20201 reopening. Also plan to check out Canyon Road Santa Fe, a half-mile stretch of the city that offers some of the most colorful and unique shopping opportunities anywhere.
