See How Abiquiu Inspired Georgia O’Keeffe
As beautiful as Abiquiu is, it’s most famous for being the home of famed artist Georgia O’Keeffe. She lived in the area from 1949 until 1986. You can tour the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio, located here in Abiquiu. Tours can be arranged by contacting the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe – we highly recommend this tour!
But visiting Abiquiu is about more than stepping into the home and studio of this famed artist. It’s also a land worthy of exploration, home to incredible attractions and outdoor adventures for those so inclined. One such place to explore, also tied to this extraordinary artist, is Ghost Ranch, the dramatic landscapes of which so often took center stage in O’Keeffe’s artwork.
As you explore the grounds of Ghost Ranch, you’ll find towering rock walls, vivid yellow and red cliffs, and bright blue skies as far as the eye can see. It’s easy to see how such a place inspired so many works of art. On the ranch, visitors can enjoy hiking and horseback riding trails, kayaking on Abiquiu Lake, ropes courses, and more. There are also frequent workshops held here and tours that allow you to see the scenes featured in her art up close and personal. The museums on the grounds of Ghost Ranch are dedicated to advancing research, education, and public engagement in Anthropology, Archaeology, and Paleontology.
Georgia O’Keeffe wasn’t the only artist inspired by the Abiquiu area. Art flourishes here, and the Abiquiu Studio Tour gives you an excellent opportunity to explore it further. Each fall, around 50 local artists open their studio doors to visitors for this unique self-guided adventure that takes visitors and collectors through the village of Abiquiu and the surrounding Chama River Valley. This year, the Abiquiu Studio Tour will take place October 9 – 11, 2021.
