The Best Places for Hiking in New Mexico in 2023

Many visitors come to northern New Mexico, particularly the cities of Santa Fe and Taos, to admire the world-renowned art and museums, and to experience the centuries-old history and culture. Of course, many of the leading artists that have come to call this area home have come drawn to the natural beauty of the high desert scenery. We can hardly blame them!

It’s this jaw-dropping scenery that gets us outside and beckons us to go hiking in New Mexico. There is, after all, no better way to see or experience this natural beauty than by hitting the trails and hiking in New Mexico. Luckily for us and all who desire to adventure here, there’s no shortage of great trails for hiking in New Mexico. The harder decision is not going to be what to do, but where to go.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite trails for hiking in New Mexico based on where they are from our Bed and Breakfast. We can’t wait to hear about which trails you choose and the adventures you have. Happy hiking!

Hiking Trails to the South of Our Bed and Breakfast in New Mexico:
  1. One of the most unique and inspiring places to go hiking in New Mexico is Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. This awe-inspiring place is about an hour from our Bed and Breakfast, and worth every minute of your time. The best trail here is the Slot Canyon Trail, a 3-mile trail that will take you through the area’s fascinating geological formations and through a short slot canyon, before enjoying a lovely view over the Sandia Crest to the west and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the north.
  2. Another popular area for hiking in New Mexico is Bandelier National Monument. Our favorite hike here is the Tsankawi Ruins hike, which takes you through the ancestral home of the San Ildefonso Pueblo people. Aside from the incredible history of this area, the views as you travel across the mesa are magnificent.
  3. The Dale Ball Trail Network in Santa Fe is an incredibly popular place to go both hiking and mountain biking. Head to the Picacho Peak Trail and enjoy the stunning 360-degree views from the top.
  4. If you want alpine beauty, head to the Nambe Lake Trail near the Santa Fe Ski Basin. At 6.8 miles it’s one of the longer hiking trails on our list.
Head North for More Hiking in New Mexico:
  1. If you want to see and experience the Rio Grande River Gorge, head to the La Vista Verde Trail. Unlike the rim trail of the Rio Grande Gorge, this one takes you deep into the heart of the gorge for an adventure like no other.
  2. The Williams Lake hike is a 5.2-mile hike that begins near the base of Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico. The hike starts in the typical dry pinyon and juniper hills of New Mexico but it ends in a stunning sub-alpine forest with views of the mountains, an alpine lake, and a waterfall.
  3. If you’re looking for a great wildflower hike in New Mexico, then you’ll want to take the Long Canyon Hike to Gold Mountain. The fields of blue columbine blooming during June and July are nothing short of stunning.
  4. The Taos Valley Overlook Trails offer 16 miles of trails and sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Rio Grande River gorge.

You’ll also find plenty of fantastic hiking in New Mexico by heading into the Carson National Forest.
