3 Small Towns Near Santa Fe That You Must Visit

1. Chimayo, NM

Located approximately 35 minutes north of Santa Fe, Chimayo is a tiny Pueblo village that has certainly made a name for itself! It is the home of the famous Chimayo weavers, the red chile pepper, and the legendary El Santuario de Chimayo and Holy Dirt. It’s also the final destination for the annual Holy Pilgrimage which takes place each Easter weekend. Many of the town’s traditions are still carried out by the villagers including blanket weaving, growing fruit and red chile, and raising cattle. Plus, Chimayo is home to our serene bed & breakfast escape, Casa Escondida! Our Chimayo inn is a go-to for couples looking to get away from it all and enjoy a traditional Southwest experience without sacrificing convenience to major attractions.

During your stay with us, don’t forget to stop by local attractions such as the Chimayo Museum or delight your taste buds at the famous Rancho de Chimayo!

2. Taos, NM

Originally believed to be the fabled city of gold by Nomadic tribes, Taos is a true treasure located in Northern New Mexico. The artsy town has inspired several great artists, including Georgia O’Keefe and Aldous Huxley. If you’re an outdoorsy person, Taos is also well-known for world-class skiing and incredible hiking trails.

One of the most popular activities in Taos, however, is exploring the Taos Pueblo, a thousand-year-old village that has served as the home to an ancient Pueblo Indian tribe. Visitors are welcome inside the village to experience the everyday life of the locals and explore the historic Pueblo houses. Tradition dictates that no running water or electricity are allowed inside, so you’ll discover a whole new way of life inside the village.

Strolling through Taos Plaza is also a prime visitor activity! This 300-year-old equivalent to “downtown” features plenty of inspiring art galleries, boutique shops, and live music performances from May to October.

3. Jemez Springs, NM

The land upon which Jemez Springs now stands was originally inhabited by the Pueblo of Guisewa for thousands of years. Interestingly enough, many of the town’s residents are descendants of these ancient Indians. Today, visitors will be delighted to find historic structures such as the Jemez State Monument and, of course, several natural hot springs.

For some extra TLC, the Jemez Springs Bath House is a unique spa that allows its visitors to soak in mineral waters that are rumored to possess miraculous healing abilities.
