More About the El Santuario de Chimayo

Since the early 1800s, the El Santuario de Chimayo has been a staple of the Chimayo community. As you may have already guessed, this quaint chapel is no ordinary church. In fact, it’s recognized as one of the holiest places in the Southwest!

According to legend, a half-buried wooden crucifix was discovered in a peculiar location by a group of men on the night of Good Friday. After alerting a local priest, the crucifix was carried away to a church. However, it mysteriously disappeared overnight and was found in the same spot it was originally discovered. This process repeated two more times before the community began to suspect that the land upon which the crucifix was found was sacred. A few years later, a Penitente brother built a small shrine around the crucifix, which is now the El Santuario de Chimayo.

Chimayo Holy Dirt

Despite its interesting history, what really makes the El Santuario de Chimayo famous is its Chimayo Holy Dirt. This may sound strange, but there’s more to it! Not long after the church was built, a small hole was found near the grounds that, according to local Indian folklore, once contained a pool of mud that possessed miraculous healing abilities. Even the Penitente brother that built the church claimed that he was healed from his severe illness by the dirt’s power.

Rumors spread, and it wasn’t long before people from all over the North American continent began traveling to the El Santuario de Chimayo to take some Chimayo Holy Dirt for themselves. Eventually, this journey became known as the Holy Pilgrimage, a beloved tradition that takes place over the Holy Weekend. Thousands of people participate in this pilgrimage, and some even walk for hundreds of miles.

After arriving at the El Santuario de Chimayo, pilgrims are invited into a small, single-windowed room that is believed to be the original site of the miracle crucifix. There, they take a handful of holy dirt from the small hole that has stood there for nearly two centuries. The dirt can then be rubbed into the skin, sprinkled in food, and even brewed into tea to reap its miraculous healing benefits.
