From exploring the exciting museums of Santa Fe to adventuring on the High Road to Taos, there’s no shortage of great ways to enjoy this sensational state.
There are many great things about our Chimayó Bed and Breakfast in New Mexico, but of them is our location between Santa Fe and Taos. From here, you can get to just about anything you want to see or do in New Mexico. Whether it’s cultural attractions, hiking, biking, skiing in the winter, visiting sacred ancient sights, or something else, we offer easy access to all the best things to do in New Mexico.
Below, we’ve listed just ten of these things – which, by no means, is a complete list. We have so much more to share with you throughout 2023, but this serves as a great start for your upcoming weekend getaways in New Mexico.
- The cultural heart of northern New Mexico is, without question, Santa Fe – a town filled with vibrant museums, hundreds of art galleries, great shops, restaurants, and so much more. One of our favorite things to do in New Mexico is to find time to visit the top Santa Fe Museums, particularly those up on Museum Hill.
- Aside from visiting Santa Fe, one of the other popular things to do in New Mexico is to visit our neighbor to the North, Taos. There are a number of great things to do in Taos, including visiting the Taos Pueblo, a famed Unesco World Heritage Site. After a long Covid-related closure, the Pueblo is once again be open to the public in 2023.
- Though there’s a quicker drive to get to Taos, the best way to get there, particularly from our Bed and Breakfast in New Mexico, is the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway, which passes right through Chimayó. As you drive, make sure not just to take in the beautiful surroundings at every bend, but to find the time to stop and visit the artisans along this famed route as well. If you time your trip for fall, you can even enjoy the High Road to Taos Studio tour, held every September.
- New Mexico is one of the leading places in the country to enjoy hot air ballooning, thanks to our warm, sunny days and mild, calm winds. Just south of us in Albuquerque, each fall you’ll find the International Balloon Fiesta – and it’s a great idea to start planning to attend this event early! Even if you don’t attend the fiesta, there are plenty of great opportunities for hot air ballooning in New Mexico.
- Taking breaks in nature is one of the best ways to truly understand the sacred grounds of New Mexico, and we can think of no better way to do this than by hiking. There are way too many hikes to list, but the Carson National Forest and the Santa Fe National Forest are great places to start.
- Take advantage of New Mexico’s warm sun this year and enjoy some wine tasting on the New Mexico Wine Trail. If you’re looking for recommendations, check out a recent blog we wrote about our favorite wineries.
- It doesn’t slow down in New Mexico in the winter. In fact, it comes alive with an entirely new slate of activities, including downhill skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more.
- Speaking of winter (though there’s never a bad time) – don’t miss the chance to soak the day away in the healing waters of New Mexico Hot Springs. One of our favorites is Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, but it’s hard to go wrong with any of them.
- Visiting some of the top cultural sites in the area is another of the most popular things to do in New Mexico. This includes places like Bandelier National Monument and Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, not to mention any of the nearby Native Pueblos when they are open to the public.
- Finally, one of the most popular things to do in New Mexico just so happens to be down the road from our Bed and Breakfast in New Mexico: The Santuario de Chimayó. The Santuario is one of the most famous churches in New Mexico, and the sight of a massive pilgrimage each spring. Of course, it’s just one of the many amazing churches worth visiting in northern New Mexico.
